Romania Steps Forward in Health Innovation and Life Sciences Collaboration
The event “Fostering Innovation in Healthcare and Strengthening Life Sciences Partnerships in Romania” took place on Thursday, 2 October, at the Palace of the Parliament, bringing together key voices from government, academia, industry, and civil society.
Organised through the joint efforts of the Ministry of Health, the G6-UMF University Alliance, and the Local American Working Group Association, under the umbrella of the Health Innovation Hub, the event highlighted Romania’s growing potential to become a regional hub for life sciences and medical innovation.
Among the distinguished participants were Dr Cristina Florescu Moraid, CEO of AVANTYO Institute of Clinical Research and President of The Bucharest International Clinical Trials Symposium, and Diana-Carmen Lupu, Marketing and Communication Director at AVANTYO Institute of Clinical Research. Their presence underscored AVANTYO’s continued commitment to advancing clinical research and promoting strategic collaboration within the Romanian and European healthcare landscape.
Discussions focused on how Romania can better access European funding, strengthen research and development in healthcare, and create long-term benefits for patients, the academic community, the healthcare system, the labour market, and the national economy.
At the European level, the European Commission recently unveiled its new strategy, “Choose Europe for Life Sciences” (2025–2030) — an ambitious plan designed to boost innovation, speed up access to new medical technologies, and enhance Europe’s global competitiveness in pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. Over €10 billion annually will be invested through programmes such as Horizon Europe, EU4Health, Digital Europe, LIFE, the Innovation Fund, and Erasmus+, supporting initiatives that drive collaboration and innovation across member states.
The Bucharest event brought together an impressive line-up of participants — from members of the Romanian Parliament’s Health Committees, the National Agency for Medicines, and the National Health Insurance House, to university representatives, leaders from the innovative pharmaceutical industry, medical professionals, patient associations, and the diplomatic community.
A major highlight of the day was the signing of a Memorandum of Collaboration aimed at shaping a national vision for the life sciences sector in Romania. This joint commitment marks an important step towards building a predictable, sustainable, and competitive life sciences ecosystem, one that supports economic growth while improving healthcare outcomes for all Romanians.
